Frequently Asked Questions applying to all courses offered
If you are a total beginner and just want the basics then start with the "Beginner Jewelry Project: Statement Earrings and Necklaces". We do not use a torch or any power tools in that course so it is a great way to see if you like the process before investing in more tools
If you know nothing about soldering but know that you want to go that route then you should take the "Soldering Crash Course" next. After that you can move onto the "Statement Rings" course
I teach each step of these courses in extreme detail, with the assumption that you might be a total beginner. And if you already have some experience then you might learn a new approach that you haven't thought of before.
Yes you can! I teach a lot of beginner details in the the "Statement Rings: Mastering Bezels and Border Embellishments" course. I show you how to properly use the jewelers saw, and files, etc.
If you do not know anything about soldering then you should probably take the "Soldering Crash Course" as well. In that course I go into deeper detail about WHY we do certain things when soldering, as well as showing soldering station set up, chemicals and solutions used in the process, etc.
In the Statement Rings course I assume you know the basics and I just cover the steps involved in the ring project.
I offer these two workshops in "The Beginner's Guide to Making Rings" bundle too.
If you do not want to work with a torch at all then I recommend trying the "Beginner Jewelry Course: Statement Earrings and Necklaces". There is a lot you can accomplish without a torch!
If you DO want to use a torch, but have no idea what you are doing then I recommend taking the "Soldering Crash Course". I go into detail about all things torch related and your questions should be answered there.
You can also preview some torch options on my Amazon Storefront.
No, the price of the courses are for instruction only
You will need to buy your own tools to complete the projects, or if you are taking the "Beginner Jewelry Course" then you will also have the option of purchasing a Project Kit from my website (when available), which also includes materials.
I have included detailed tool lists for each course, complete with item numbers that correspond to the Rio Grande website as well as a full Amazon storefront so that you can find what you need easily.
I know that it can feel like a big investment to get started in jewelry making, so it is very important to me to show you how you can do it on a budget too. To accommodate different budgets I have marked tools as required, optional, and upgrades.
When you purchase a course you will also have my "teacher code" for the Rio Grande website which will give you the wholesale pricing for 6 months
I teach these courses in a way that would allow you to get started with the most basic set up, with hand tools only. (especially for the "Beginner Jewelry Project") There are no power tools that are REQUIRED, (even in the "Statement Rings" course), though I do recommend some upgrades that will make things easier once you are ready to make those purchases.
Yes! Please take a look at my Amazon Storefront. You will find lists of tools, broken down into categories like "Bench Tool Essentials", "Soldering Chemicals and Solutions", "Bigger tools and Upgrades".
Whether you choose to buy from Amazon or not, it is a great way for me to share a visual with you for the kinds of tools and price ranges that you can expect as you start to gather jewelry tools. (Amazon is not always the cheapest!).
Be sure to read the description that I have included for each item.

No. Taking these courses does not guarantee success on your first attempt. Jewelry making and soldering take time and practice, and everyone works a little bit differently. I have experience teaching thousands of beginner students so I believe that my approach to teaching is one that will work for a wide range of beginner or intermediate students.
Courses can not be returned. Once the material is delivered to you it can not be undone.
Yes of course. Please email me through the contact page of my website. This link will redirect you. Please allow a couple days for a response.
Hi I am Stacey! I am a jewelry designer, teacher, and an outdoor adventurer.
I have been teaching in-person jewelry making workshops since 2018 at my studio in Portland, Oregon. During that time I have taught thousands (yes, thousands!) of students, all of them walking away with beautiful finished jewelry.
After working with so many people, many of whom had no experience at all, I have learned how to effectively present this information in easy to understand and approachable way.
It has been an honor to help spark the creative flames in so many beginner metalsmiths. And I hope that I can help you too!
I love to surf, mountain bike, hike, backpack and camp. The name of my business was inspired by my love of surfing!
I am SO grateful that I get to call myself an artist and that I get to help other people find their creative outlets. It's truly the best!
