Soldering Crash Course

  • Course
  • 29 Lessons

In this course I will take the mystery out of soldering by giving you VERY detailed information about each step. I will go over workspace set up, all the tools you need to get started, how to choose a torch, and chemical solutions like flux and "pickle", etc. After completing this course you will have the knowledge to assess the proper way to set up your next soldering project and to execute it with confidence.

What will you take away from this course?

When you first get started with jewelry making soldering seems so confusing and mysterious! There's fire, potions, mixtures of various chemicals, a very specific order of operations, different soldering temperatures, doing everything with two hands, and on top of all of that you can easily melt your piece in the final moment. It's stressful to try to figure out on your own. (trust me, I've done it!)

I have worked with thousands of beginner students and I have learned a lot about where people get stuck with understanding these soldering techniques.

Let me help you take the guess work out of soldering and save you a bunch of time and headache.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do we make in this course?

This is NOT a project based course. I will be showing you examples of various scenarios that you will come across when you are doing future projects.

A the end of the course you should have the information to be able to choose how you set up whatever project you have in mind.

Is there a prerequisite for this course?

Nope. This is a great place to start if you have no experience.

This course (or similar knowledge) is a prerequisite for the other courses.

I am a total beginner. Is this course right for me?

  • Yes! In this course I go through the many details of soldering. I also cover all of the tools and "solutions" that you will need to accomplish your soldering tasks.

How many times can I watch the videos?

As many times as you want!

Does this course include tools?

  • No, the price of this course is for instruction only

  • I have included a detailed tool list complete with item numbers.

  • You do not need ALL of the tools that I cover in this course. This is more of an information course to show you what all the terminology means and what the options are so that you can move forward in an informed way.

  • I know that it is a big investment to get started in jewelry making, so I try to show you how you can do it on a budget too.

Do you provide any recommendations on where to buy tools?

Yes! I provide you with a detailed list with item numbers that correspond to the Rio Grande website, which is a very popular supplier. (And in mid July I will be adding another resource for other places to buy tools, like Amazon or other suppliers. You will automatically get this update.)

How do I know what kind of torch I should choose?

In this course I will go over as much detail as possible about torch safety. I recommend three main types of torches and you can choose something as simple as a small butane torch. I do not use the butane torch in the videos, but if you decide to go that route ALL of the other information about soldering will still apply.

Do I need a designated studio space for this work?

While a designated space is AWESOME it is definitely not necessary. (I ran my whole business out of a corner of my living room for years!)

However, when you are using a torch you need to consider flammability of your surfaces and also ventilation. These are things that we cover in detail in this course.

My question wasn't aswered. Can I contact you?

Yes of course. Please email me through the contact page of my website. This link will redirect you. Please allow a couple days for a response.
